PVC compounds are created by combining the polymer with various additives to achieve the desired properties for specific applications. The concentration of these additives is typically recorded in parts per hundred resin (phr). The compound is produced by thoroughly mixing these ingredients, and it becomes a gelled article when exposed to heat (and shear). Depending on the type of PVC and the additives used, the compound before gelation can be a freeflowing powder, referred to as a dry blend, or a liquid in the form of a paste or solution. By incorporating plasticizers, PVC compounds can be made flexible and are usually known as P-PVC. In contrast, compounds without plasticizers, used for rigid applications, are referred to as UPVC.
